Hermann Scheer

Hermann Scheer

The politician
(Germany)

Hermann Scheer is a creative politician, journalist and initiator. As a member of the German Bundestag, Chairman of the World Renewable Energies and winner of the Alternative Nobel Prize, he mobilized for years renewable energy as a key to couple technological progress with moral and to couple ecology with economics. In 2000, he was involved in the development of the Renewable Energies Act (EEG). Due to his dedication Germany has become the worldleader of energy production by renewable energies. So far, 47 states have adopted the law on renewable energy feed-in tariffs.

“I am convinced that anyone who has understood that the possibility to change to 100% renewables exists and why it is necessary now, will never get it out of the head again.”

Preben Maegaard

Preben Maegaard

The Founder
(Denmark)

By founding the Nordic Folkecenter in Denmark in 1983 Preben Maegaard has set a clear signal for decentralized energy autonomy. Now he lives in the largest energy-autonomous region in the world. 50,000 people get 100% of their electricity from wind power. As a renowned author, government advisor and lecturer Maegaard spreads his vast knowledge in order to initiate the establishment of similar centers in the world.

“ I see Energy Autonomy as an absolutely realistic possibility. I can only say so, because we did it and I think if we have done it here, why should we not be able to do it in the rest of the world..”

Muhammad Yunus

Muhammad Yunus

The Banker
(Bangladesh)

Yunus' financial institution, the Grameen Bank, is also one of the most successful rural-based renewable energy companies worldwide. By allocating micro-credits for the poor in rural areas 400 000 Mini-solar systems in Bangladesh were financed and installed by Grameen Shakti. 95% of their clients and installers are female – a revolution in itself. Yunus has formed the term of “social entrepreneurship” on the world market and thus he also carried his visionary ideas far beyond the borders of Bangladesh. His work was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.

“The sun is a source of energy, Human being is also a source of energy, creative energy. So when do you say poor, poor are the people who couldn't use their creative energy.”

Ibrahim Togola

Ibrahim Togola

The Builder
(Mali/ Africa)

For Ibrahim Togola the renewable energies are the only technology that provides access to electricity and thus economic development for the rural population of Mali.
Inspired by a one-year training period at Preben Maegaard he installed energy systems in the villages of Mali as the founder and head of the Mali Folke Center. Here he spreads the sustainable knowledge and information about the chances of renewable energy. His goal: global justice.

“ More than two million people do not have access to light, to a lamp at home. We need an institution which thinks about those who were forgotten by today's energy sytem.”

Maria Skyllas-Kazacos

The Storage Expert
(New Zealand)

As a professor of chemical engineering Maria Skyllas-Kazacos is one of the most respected energy specialist and primary developer of the vanadium redox battery (VRB). The battery can store electrical power from renewable energy sources and thus secures a stable and reliable supply.

“Renewable Energy is intermissioned – the sun doesn't shine at night or on cloudy days and the wind will stop blowing occasionally, so if you're going to have a high penetration of renewable energy you have got to be able to store it.”

Matthias Willenbacher

Matthias Willenbacher

The Entrepreneur
(Germany)

The enthusiastic entrepreneur is one of the leading project developers of renewable energy. The company's philosphy is formed by the vision of a pure energy supply by renewables. The best example of the workability of this vision is the headquarter where about 700 people are working: the most energy-efficient office building in the world was designed in-house, built within a year and now produces more energy than it consumes. A symbol for the realization of the imminent transformation to renewable energies.

“It was love at first sight – the idea of gaining energy for the people out of nature's power fascinated me from the beginning. And it didn't let me go.”

Maximilian Gege

Maximilian Gege

The Efficiency Specialist
(Germany)

Maximilian Gege advises small and medium enterprises and traders with regard to the lucrative and cost-effective use of environmental measures in their business. As an expert in finance and controlling with the background of an environmental scientist, he calculates how much of the current energy consumption is related to the ineffective use of building materials and supply technologies. In numerous publications, he supplies a wide range of practical proposals for the efficient use of energy in everyday life.

“There are 39 billion Euro of buying power, which could be given back to the people.”

Elon Musk

Elon Musk

The Inventor
(California/ USA)

After the founded the online payment system, paypal, and the space company SpaceX Musk now breaks the most innovative and spectacular ways in the field of electric mobility as head of a Californian car manufacturer. Musks goal is to liberate the American consumer from its dependence on oil imports and energy conglomerates, and to implement sustainable mobility.

“We must find a way to have the economy based on renewable energy, cause consider the obvious, if it's not renewable we gonna run out and face collaps.”

Bianca Jagger

The Human Rights Advocate
(Latin America)

Bianca Jagger is a prominent international human rights advocate. She is Founder and Chair of the Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation, Council of Europe Goodwill Ambassador, Member of the Executive Director's Leadership Council of Amnesty International (USA) and Trustee of the Amazon Charitable Trust. Due to her Nicaraguan origin, she is primarily engaged in forestry projects, such as the non-profit organization Amazonas Sustainable Foundation (FAS) in Brazil, dediacted to the preservation and protection of the rainforest. Her commitment was awarded with the Alternative Nobel Prize.

“We need to have a holistic approach – you cannot think of the world as the global south and the global north we need to think of the world as one and we are all in it together. What affects the people in the developping world will affect the people in the developped world.”
